Customs Clearance Agent – Why Do You Need One?

Are you looking at buying cars from Northern Ireland, Great Britain, or from abroad? You’ll need to perform many critical actions in order to have the vehicle formally registered, which is where customs clearance agents in Ireland can be of great assistance. Imported vehicles must now undergo a customs declaration prior to being registered in Ireland and paying Vehicle Registration Tax (see our VRT calculators).

We offer personalised customs agent services for all of your importing needs through the preparation and submission of customs declarations, faster clearing of vehicles through customs, and ensuring that you remain compliant.

With the United Kingdom no longer a member country in the European Union, the customs process for importing goods and products into Ireland has become far more complex. It is not feasible to perform the customs declaration process yourself. Instead, it is critical that you choose a reliable service provider that offers the knowledge and expertise required to perform this complex task.

This is why independent customs clearance agents in Ireland are essential. Like hiring a professional tax accountant during tax season, our services cater to individuals and businesses requiring customs declarations and want to accelerate the process and avoid delays. To summarise, people require tax accountants for taxes just like customs agents are necessary to perform customs declarations.

VRT Ireland is your expert choice for customs agents in Ireland. Get in touch with us today to order a customs declaration.

Customs Clearance Agent – FAQs

What does a customs agent do?

Any time an individual or business in Ireland wishes to import or export goods or products to/from a foreign nation, they must abide by Irish customs and dutifully submit a customs return. The individual or business engaged in trading may retain the services of a customs agent in Ireland who has the authority to performs these tasks on the behalf of their client. The complexity of the entire customs declaration process can be a real headache If you retain the services of a customs agent in Ireland, they will perform the import and/or export process for you, which can make the entire process far easier and more cost-effective whilst potentially reducing delays due to inaccuracies/incomplete declarations, for example. Avoid errors and delays by requesting our personalised customs agent services today.

What is the customs declaration process?

In Ireland, the customs declaration process is a complex task, consider retaining a customs agent in Ireland to perform these tasks on your behalf.

Private individuals can register for an EORI number using myAccount or ROS online portals. Once you has a valid EORI number, you are permitted to import/export goods from abroad.

Next, the customs duties owed and VAT owed must be calculated. For vehicles, additional considerations must be made such as VRT. Customs, VAT, and VRT calculators can provide an estimation accounting for the total owed to customs authorities and Revenue Ireland.

Importers must submit their customs declaration and associated paperwork, this is the most complicated step for importers. Buyer/seller information, importer/exporter information, product information, transport, commodity codes, customs procedures and more must all be provided for customs authorities to evaluate the declaration.

Once the total customs duties owed have been calculated and declaration submitted, you must make payment through myAccount or ROS to cover this cost. Insufficient funds will lead to a failed process, so ensure you’ve added enough to pay the full amount.

The declaration process is completed when customs duties and VAT have been paid in full.

What to look for in a customs clearance agent?

In order to become a customs agent (not to be confused with customs officers, who work with Garda and other agencies) in the Republic of Ireland, individuals can register as an Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) or in Northern Ireland as a Trusted Trader. These accreditations are not prerequisites to becoming a customs agent in Ireland, but they do add reliability and ensure clients that the trader is operating in good faith and adheres faithfully to customs regulations in Ireland.

How much does it cost to clear customs?

The cost of clearing customs for products imported into the Republic of Ireland from outside the European Single Market, e.g. Northern Ireland or Great Britain, depends on many factors and variables, as well as the type of commodity being imported. Generally, customs duties, excise, and VAT apply. The current VAT rate (as of 1 March 2021) is 23%.

Thus, to give an example, a private individual who purchases a BMW 3 series in the UK for £10,000 will be required to pay 10% customs duty and 23% VAT.

The customs calculation is as follows:

£10,000 = €11,707

€11,707 @ 10% = €1170.70

The VAT calculation is as follows:

€11,707 + €1170.70 = €12,877.70

€12,877.70 @ 23% = €2961.87

The total customs clearance is as follows:

€1170.70 + €2961.87 = €4132.57
