Import Vehicles from Abroad with an EORI Number

VRT Ireland provides personalised services for clients in Ireland importing cars from the UK such as assistance with EORI number registration, customs duties, VAT, and customs declarations.

Buying cars from Northern Ireland or elsewhere in the United Kingdom shouldn’t be a hassle, but unfortunately, there’s a lot of red tape that often makes the process a headache, especially if the importer fails to mind their p’s and q’s. The customs declaration process is extremely complex and without the assistance of customs clearance agent services, it is virtually impossible for an individual or business to complete a customs declaration.

EORI Number Ireland: Step-by-Step Guide to Register

There are 2 methods to register for an EORI number. The first method is via ROS and this is generally how businesses request EORI numbers. The second method is via Revenue myAccount and this is generally how private individuals request EORI numbers.

Method 1: Create a Revenue Online Service (ROS) Account

If you are a business in most circumstances you should register for an EORI number via ROS.

Step 1: Register for an online account:

Unless you are already registered with Revenue Online Service (ROS), you will need to register for an account here. The process is simple and straightforward. First, you must request a ROS Access Number (RAN). Once your request for a RAN has been fulfilled you will be able to log in and apply for your digital certificate. Lastly, you can choose to download or save a digital copy of your certificate.

Step 2: Request an EORI number

Log into ROS, choose customs, excise registration, and follow the below steps:

  1. Click ‘Manage Tax Registrations’
  2. Proceed to Registration Options > Register (next to Customs and Excise)
  3. Fill out the eRegistration form completely
  4. Check/uncheck the tick box ‘importing/exporting goods to/from the EU’ as needed
  5. Proceed to Requests > SubmitYou are now registered for customs and excise.

Method 2: Create a Revenue

myAccount

If you are a private individual in most circumstances, you should register for an EORI number via Revenue myAccount.

Step 1: Register for online account:

Unless you are already registered with Revenue myAccount you begin by creating a myAccount with Revenue. You will be prompted to enter your PPS number, date of birth, and to create a password. You can also proceed directly to your account by entering your MyGovID login credentials.

Step 2: Request an EORI number

Log into Revenue myAccount and submit a new enquiry as described in the figure below

What is an EORI Number?

What is an EORI number? In brief, it is a common reference identifier for economic operators in the European Union. The acronym stands for Economic Operators’ Registration and Identification.

Specifically, it is an identification number consisting of two parts, a country code followed by a unique code/number, required during customs procedures that enables businesses and individuals to trade goods within the European Union (EU). If you operate a business or trade as an individual across EU member states (including if you are established outside of a member state) you require an EORI number.

Take advantage of our skilled expertise and give VRT Ireland a call today to request assistance with our customs declaration service for your imported vehicle.

Determining VAT and Customs Duties Owed

Now that you are formally registered with an EORI identification number you can get down to calculating VAT and customs duties on imported goods. Calculating customs duties, VAT, and VRT is a complex process and one that requires knowledge and experience.

For simple customs duties calculations, our handy customs duties calculator can assist you with imported vehicles from the United Kingdom into Ireland. To calculate customs duties and VAT, as is required since 1 January 2021, use our customs duties and VAT calculator

The calculation process for imported vehicles can be fairly complex and time-consuming since you must consider various accounting calculations such as depreciation, as well as vehicle classification revenue categories. Rather than performing these cumbersome calculations by hand, use our VRT calculator for vehicles.

Note that it is important to be aware of the entire cost of importing a vehicle as you may need to account for customs duties, VAT, and VRT for vehicles. Incorrect calculations can be an expensive mistake if you underestimate the amount of tax you need to pay when importing the vehicle. Use a reliable and trusted UK Car Import Costs Calculator so you are informed when importing a vehicle from the UK to Ireland.

Get in touch with us at VRT Ireland if you require assistance calculating customs duties, VAT, and/or VRT for your vehicle.

Make Payment to Your Customs Account via Your EORI Number in Ireland

After calculating the customs duties & VAT for imported goods, you must first have the necessary funds to cover the cost of customs duties and VAT owed on the goods. You must also be able to pay for the Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) upon registering the vehicle in Ireland.

In relation to Customs and VAT, payment can be done by transferring funds to your customs and excise account. The process of transferring funds into a ROS account or myAccount is described in greater detail here. Keep in mind that if you neglect to top up your account with sufficient funds to cover the costs, the customs declaration will not be executed, and you’ll have lost time and effort.

Submit Your Customs Declaration

Up to this step, you’ll have already performed all of the preparatory work needed to submit customs declarations for imported vehicles. Unfortunately, the customs declaration itself is a complicated and time-consuming process that requires a significant amount of foreknowledge to fill out and submit properly.

That’s why we welcome you to contact us for assistance throughout the importing process. Our team of experts can help you every step of the way, from calculating customs duties and VRT due to making the entire customs declaration process quick and hassle-free.

EORI Number – FAQs

What is an EORI number?

An Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number is an identification number for economic operators, such as businesses or individuals, trading within the European Union (EU). Various member states’ customs administrations and authorities use EORI numbers to improve the efficiency of trade between EU member states and for statistical purposes.

What is an EORI number used for?

EORI numbers are used by economic operators and customs authorities within the European Union (EU) to monitor and track shipments of goods and products entering or leaving the EU. The EORI number is used by economic operators such as businesses or sole traders to lodge customs declarations or to submit entry/exit summary declarations, for example.

How do I get an EORI number in Ireland?

In order to apply for an EORI number in the Republic of Ireland, you will first require an account with either myAccount or ROS. Both of these portals enable individuals or businesses to register for an EORI number and to apply for the number all in one convenient place.

How do I find an EORI number by company name?

In Ireland, there is no way to look up an EORI number simply with the company name. Some member states may provide a resource to do this, however. For businesses in Ireland, it is possible to check the validity of an EORI number using the EU’s EORI number validation retrieval tool. If you know the company’s VAT number, you may be able to perform this action by preceding the VAT number with ‘IE.’

Is an EORI number the same as a VAT number?

For individuals, the EORI number is generally the same as the PPS number. For importers in Ireland, the EORI number of a company/trader is normally the same as the VAT number. The EORI is always preceded by the EU member country code, which in the case of Ireland is ‘IE.’ Therefore, in many cases, a company’s EORI number will look like IE + (VAT number) or IE + (PPS number).

How do I check if I have an EORI number?

It is possible to verify the validity of an EORI number in Ireland and elsewhere in the European Union by using the EORI number validation tool provided by the European Commission. Simply enter your EORI number and the yielded results will confirm whether or not your EORI number is valid.
