Is it always worth importing a car from the UK?

The answer is simple, not all the time.

I'm sure you've heard stories of people saving thousands buying cars in the UK which in many cases are true.

The 2 things people forget are:

(i) You have no warranty, in short if there is something wrong with the car you buy are you really going to go all the way to the UK to return the car. The answer is most likely no. Only really new cars with manufacturer warranties will be covered under warrantly in Ireland for the most part.

(ii) You'll need to sell your old car. This can be quite time consuming and some hassle.

In summary if you were to sell your car privately and go to an Irish car dealer or a private seller as a cash buyer and request no warrantly with the car, the savings in importing a car may not be that big.

In short, do the sums before commiting to importing a car from the UK.
