UK resident buying vehicle in Ireland

I'm currently in the UK although I live in Australia. I'm thinking about buying a particular vehicle in Ireland with a view to touring Europe. If I want it to remain on Irish plates, which I'd prefer, do I need an Irish address to transfer ownership to my name? Alternatively, since I'm intending to export it permanently, and possibly register it in the UK, does one have to deregister it in Ireland? Any info will be really helpful.
